The medal target for the Malaysian contingent announced by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin last month, is within touching distance.

Khairy had set a target of 56 per cent of total events contested in, or 180 medals of any colour, and after the 10th day, the national contingent has collected 177 -- 59 gold, 53 silver and 65 bronze.

Based on 39 sporting events contested at the SEA Games in Singapore, the total number of gold medals collected so far has eclipsed the national contingent's achievement in Indonesia four years ago.

In Indonesia, Malaysia picked up 53 gold, 39 silver and 55 bronze medals in the same 39 events but their overall haul was 59 gold, 50 silver and 81 bronze.

Meanwhile, in Myanmar in 2013, Malaysia only managed 33 gold, 32 silver and 64 bronze medals through the same 39 events.

The national contingent seemed to have received a moral boost with the appearance of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who witnessed several of the events contested on Sunday.

The National athletes added 14 gold medals to their tally today through archery (four), sailing (three), pencak silat (three), rhythmic gymnastics (two), cycling (one) and water skiing (one).

The sweetest achievements were that of rhythmic gymnasts N. Shasangari and Koi Sie Yan, who both received the gold medal for the individual all around event, after finishing level on points.

Meanwhile, Thailand continued to distance themselves from hosts Singapore at the top with 87 gold, 83 silver and 64 bronze, with the latter currently having 82 gold, 72 silver and 98 bronze.

Vietnam remain in third place with 73 gold, 51 silver and 56 bronze.
