Four teachers, believed to be linked to the recent leak of the UPSR Science and English papers were detained in a raid in Penang and Perak today.

According to a Bernama report, Kuala Lumpur CID director SAC Gan Kong Meng was quoted as saying, those detained are between 30 and 54-years-old.

“Three of them were arrested in Penang while one was detained in Perak. Police had also seized their communication gadgets in the raid,” said the report.

Gan said the arrest was made at 3.30pm.

To date, 10 individuals have been called to give statements, including six Malaysian Examination Board (MES) members, a journalist and three teachers.

Last Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the suspension of Examination Board director Dr Na’imah Ishak and deputy director of operations Dr Wan Ilias Wan Salleh over the leaks.

Muhyiddin had said that Na’imah had to take responsibility for the two leaked papers because it affects the integrity of the ministry and public examinations.

Meanwhile, Malay daily newspaper Kosmo reported that the government will have to fork out millions of ringgit for the new sets of Science and English papers.

A source told the daily that the cost included paper cost, logistics, invigilators’ allowances and others for the exams.

Following the leaks in the Science 018, 028 and 038 and English 014/1 and 014/2 papers on Thursday, almost half a million UPSR students around the country now have to resit the papers on Sept 30.
