Facebook has issued a statement denying that there was an attack on its servers which has caused the downtime on Monday, disabling users from accessing its services for some 40 minutes.

The outage on its services was the result of a technical foul up that eventually led to the system malady which was experienced by the majority of users worldwide.

“This was not the result of a third-party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems," the Facebook statement said as reported by Reuters.

"Both services are back to 100 percent for everyone.”

Earlier, a group of hackers who allegedly breached the Malaysia Airlines’ official website is claiming credit for the outage of popular social media networks, Facebook and Instagram, on Tuesday.

Notoriously known as The Lizard Squad, the group wrote: “Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, AIM, Hipchat #offline #LizardSquad” on its Twitter account.

A massive Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack in the United States has caused the servers of Facebook and Instagram to face an unceremonious down time.
