KUALA LUMPUR: Unofficial results show that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has won 48 seats in the 12th Sarawak state election, thus obtaining a simple majority to form a new state government.

There are 82 seats in the state assembly with 42 needed for a simple majority and 55 is needed for a two-thirds majority.

Official results show GPS has won in six seats, namely Balai Ringin, Beting Maro, Asajaya and Gedong.

GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg won the Gedong seat. Abang Johari was the Satok assemblyperson for 40 years but moved move to Gedong in this election.


The opposition has so far only picked up one seat - Ba'kelalan by Parti Sarawak Bersatu's Baru Bian.
