Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir today announced his resignation as Kedah Menteri Besar following the state’s Menteri Besar crisis.

"I was informed that I have lost the majority support by the Kedah Council of Regency yesterday," he said at a press conference in Wisma Darul Aman today.

Mukhriz also announced that the post will be taken over by Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.

He added that he felt like a heavy burden has been lifted from his shoulders.

Apart from stepping down as the Menteri Besar, Mukhriz also relinquished his position as President of the Kedah Football Association (KFA).

Mukhriz said he would remain in UMNO to serve the people despite holding no position.

Mukhriz, who was sworn in as the 11th menteri besar of Kedah on May 6, 2013, said he had discharged his responsibilities with honesty and integrity.

Yesterday, 13 out of the 15 opposition members were summoned to have an audience with the Kedah Regency Council in relation to the issue.
