Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar will retire tomorrow after serving the EC for 16 years.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof, in a statement, said Wan Ahmad's compulsory retirement at 66 was in accordance with Article 114 (3) of the Federal Constitution.

He said Wan Ahmad held the post since Dec 17, 2004 and was head of the EC Communication and Information, Training, Voter Education and Publication Committee.

"He had also assisted the EC by heading its several work teams to study improvements for the commission and in managing the general elections in the country," he said.

Wan Ahmad was involved in four general elections (1999, 2004, 2008 and 2013), 42 by-elections (from 1998-2013) and three re-delineation exercises for the electoral boundaries in the peninsula and Sabah in 1990 and 2003, and in Sarawak in 2005.

Other than attending seminars at the international level, Wan Ahmad had also headed delegations as observers in general elections in 19 countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, South Africa, Bosnia, India, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the Philippines.
