Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today hit out at certain quarters who want to field national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei as a candidate for the Kajang by-election.

“Don’t touch Lee Chong Wei. He is a national treasure. As Sports Minister I will not allow it,” said Khairy in a Twitter posting today.

On Friday MCA had announced the party is currently scrutinising all proposals for candidates including Chong Wei for Barisan Nasional’s candidate in the by-election.

Its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai did not dismiss the possibility of fielding the World No. 1 player saying his popularity may help BN win the seat.

A local daily had quoted Padang Besar UMNO division head Datuk Zahidi Zainul as saying he felt MCA should field a popular candidate against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and suggested Chong Wei.

He added with Chong Wei as candidate for the Kajang by-election, many issues plaguing the country now can also be shifted.

On January 24th Kajang assemblyman PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh resigned from his post, a move said to open the way for Anwar to become Selangor Menteri Besar.

Anwar has since dismissed the allegations as baseless.

Following Chin Cheh’s resignation Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim announced the party will field Opposition Leader Anwar as the candidate for the Kajang by-election.
