The upcoming meeting on the Rohingya people to be held on May 29, will focus only on humanitarian assistance as Thailand wants to avoid conflict among those present.

Thailand Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha said the internal political issue of each country would not be discussed in the special meeting as it could lead to confusion.

Thailand, which will host the meeting, is optimistic that some sort of initial solution to the problem of the Rohingyas will be reached and invited 15 countries as well as several related international organisations to attend.

He said the solution must not bring a conflict among countries in the region.

Asked on the status of Myanmar's attendance, Prayuth said he was initially informed by Thailand's Foreign Ministry that all parties accepted the invitation to attend the meeting.

Malaysia, which is the intended destination for almost all of the Rohingyas and Bangladeshi Muslims who took the journey across the Bay of Bengal, is also among the countries invited to the meeting.

Thailand and Malaysia are expected to have some discussions before the meeting with Thailand Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn who is expected to visit his counterpart (Datuk Seri Anifah Aman) in Putrajaya on May 20.
