Another 63 COVID-19-related fatalities were reported in Indonesia in the past 24 hours as the nation’s infection tally rose to 51,427 cases.

Achmad Yurianto, spokesman for the Indonesian authorities on COVID-19 said 1,240 new cases were recorded overnight, with the death toll now standing at 2,683 cases.

“A total of 13,506 patients are still under COVID-19 surveillance,” he said at his COVID-19 daily briefing here today.

East Java remains the province with the highest number of deaths at 796 cases, followed by Jakarta (616 cases), Southern Kalimantan (178), West Jawa (173), while the rest were in other provinces.

The spike in fatalities in East Java since Ramadan is believed to have been caused by city folk returning to their hometowns during Aidilfitri last month.

East Java currently has the most number of positive cases after Jakarta with 10,545, and in the past 24 hours, 356 new cases and 32 deaths were reported in the province. The case tally in Jakarta, meanwhile now stands at 10,591.
