A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said, with strong tremors felt across the Himalayan nation and parts of India.

The quake struck 77 kilometres (48 miles) north west of Kathmandu, with reports of damage in the Nepali capital.

Social media like Twitter was flooded with news of the earthquake and some had shared their experiences and photos of the incident.

Several places in India were also reported to have felt the tremor.

Meanwhile, a Malaysian tourist Citanurhani Hussin who was holidaying with friends said she felt the tremor in her hotel in Agra, India.

"We were about to check out when I felt the tremor. At first I thought the bellboy was being rough with our bags but then I saw the towels hung behind the door swinging and felt the shake," she said when contacted.

She said hotel staff said their restaurant patrons had ran out of the building when they first felt the tremor.

"The second tremor was felt about 25 minutes after the first one. We quickly walked out of the hotel," she added.
