There is no need for Malaysia to follow Singapore's move in approving the usage of the first dengue vaccine in the world, says Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya.

Malaysia has to weigh in several factors before deciding on the use of the world's first dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia, for dengue fever treatment in the country.

Malaysia is to only decide by June whether to use the world's first dengue vaccine now already licensed in Mexico, Brazil, El Salvador and the Philippines.

A scientific study on the first dengue vaccine produced by French company, Sanofi, showed it could only give effective protection to 47 per cent of dengue patients, Health Minister said.

Dengvaxia secured its first regulatory approval in Mexico a fortnight ago and is currently being reviewed by around 20 countries in Asia and Latin America.

Clinical tests on several types of dengue vaccines are being carried out by the private sector to test their effectiveness, the Health Ministry says.
