Malaysia's Thomas Cup victory on May 16 1992

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s success in winning the Thomas Cup 22 years ago against Indonesia has not faded from the minds of the public.

Each time the sporting event is held, the spirit of the 1992 games seeps back into people’s minds.

On May 16 1992, the Thomas Cup was successfully won by Malaysia after beating Indonesia, 3-2.

Back then, Malaysian players Rashid Sidek, Foo Kok Keong, Kwan Yoke Meng, and doubles team Cheah Soon Kit-Soo Beng Kiang and Razif Sidek-Jalani Sidek created history.

It was a great win for Malaysia as the last time the country lifted the coveted trophy was 25 years prior to that day, in 1967.

The 1992 finals which were held at Stadium Negara was accompanied by the song ‘Fikirkan Boleh’, which till now is synonymous with Malaysian Thomas Cup matches.

Rashid Sidek managed to defeat Indonesia’s Ardy Bernardus Wiranata (15-11, 10-15, 15-8) however his brothers, doubles pair Jailani and Razik lost to Indonesia’s Eddy Hartono and Rudy Gunawan (9-15,15-9, 3-15).

The second doubles match saw Soon Kit and Beng Kiang win against Rexy Manaiky and Ricky Subagja 15-12, 10-15, 15-8.

The 3-1 win allowed Malaysia to lift the coveted Thomas Cup trophy.

12 years later, Malaysia managed to reach the finals in 2002 however failed to win the title.




Once again, the opportunity for Malaysia to win has come again with Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and doubles pair Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How.

The national team defeated Indonesia 3-0 during the semi-finals in New Delhi last night.
