Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) president, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, intends to resign if the Harimau Malaya (national football squad) fail to qualify for the final round of the 2019 Asian Cup.

Tengku Abdullah said this in his speech, the text of which was read out by FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, at FAM's fifth executive committee (exco) meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, Saturday.

Hamidin told reporters afterwards that Tengku Abdullah had previously voiced his disappointment with the squad.

"Actually, he was supposed to be present and chair the meeting, but he also has a meeting with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in Bahrain," said Hamidin.

The Harimau Malaya squad still have the opportunity to qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup although it is an uphill battle after losing 0-6 to the Palestinians and only managing a 1-1 draw against Timor Leste at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Group A of the 2018 World Cup 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Malaysia will next face the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sept 3 and Saudi Arabia on Sept 8.

Following the decline in the world rankings of the Malaysian squad, FAM said it would establish a special task force to examine the issue.

FAM deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah said the committee will be chaired by Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad, who is the chairman of FAM's Technical and Youth Development Committee.

"The task force will examine and make recommendations in the near future. After Aidilfitri, the committee will meet. In the near future, they will provide recommendations on the national football coach's position," said Afandi.
