I still remember my conversation with mom and dad at the beginning of Ramadan or fasting month recently.
We talked about how the village folks saved their money, so that they can have good meals during Ramadan.
Hence, I see tonnes of people flocking the Machang wet market and farmer's market -- shopping for the finest meat.
In the city, the spirit is about the same.
But what's funny is that people seem to be eager to celebrate Hari Raya more compared to celebrating the month of Ramadan.
Come first day of Ramadan, we often hear Hari Raya songs playing at every shopping centres in the country, not to mention decorations of giant ketupats and colourful lights.
Strangely, we almost never hear 'tunes' solely dedicated for Ramadan -- tunes that remind us about patience, good deeds, forgiveness and sharing.
I feel sorry for Ramadan... somewhat sad. Somehow, Ramadan is not widely celebrated like its neighbour, Syawal.
People often see Ramadan as a month of 'preparation' for Hari Raya.
A month for them to shop, to make almost everything look brand new - from clothes, to carpets, to high definition TV sets, make-ups, new rims, to even new hairstyle!
Towards the end of Ramadan, they would rush to do a 'last minute' shopping spree. A this point, nothing is more important (for them) than completing the list.
Everyone wants to make themselves, their family, their household the envy of the town.
For those who are into business, Ramadan would be the time where they'd make more (and more) money.
Some would sell cookies, some would sell cakes, while others would take this opportunity to sell Raya clothes, scarfs, and other accessories.
For restaurant owners, of course it would be the famous 'Ramadan buffet'.
But if we look back, is it true that everything has to change for the sake of Hari Raya? Is it true that Ramadan is just a 'platform' for us to make money in order to fill up our wardrobes, decorate our homes?
If we forget that we are still in the fasting month, let's take some time to reflect ourselves and do what God asks us to do, and be moderate for His sake.
