UMNO grassroots leaders should take up the role of rebutting slander spread by the opposition and explain the matters to the people, said party Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said this was because addressing the allegations hurled at the government, UMNO and its leaders was not just the responsibility of the party's top leaders.

"The opposition survives on slander. If that (slander) is not countered, it will eventually change the people's perception as the slander might be perceived as true.

"We know that issues raised by the opposition have been all lies and when such issues have been explained, the people get the real picture," he said when opening the Batu Sapi UMNO division delegates' conference, here, Saturday.

Ismail Sabri, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said for instance, Wanita UMNO could take the door-to-door approach while both the party's Youth and Puteri could rebut the slanders via online.

Earlier, Batu Sapi UMNO chief Datuk Samsudin Yahya tabled a motion that the division is against foreign intervention in the country's affairs.
