Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has denied that the current political crisis was a result of his resignation as prime minister.

In a statement posted on his blog, chedet.cc, Dr Mahathir said he had admitted before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that he had lost support from his supporters.

"The Prime Minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) claimed that the political crisis started when I, Mahathir Mohamad, resigned as prime minister.

"Is it true that I had suddenly resigned without a reason? I, who was supposedly supported by the government and opposition parties, including Najib Tun Razak and others who are standing trial on charges of corruption supporting me? This is just absurd.

"The truth is that I resigned because in my admission to Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, I did not get the support from my supporters. I could not get a majority and no longer qualified to be prime minister," the statement said.

Subsequently, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong accepted his resignation but at the same time Dr Mahathir was appointed the interim prime minister.

"Who is going to replace me? The people are tired of politicians who place the importance of politics above good governance.

“I suggested a national government, whereby not a politically informed person will also join the government.

"Party members will also join the government but as ordinary people who are not subjected to their party's agenda.

“But my proposal was rejected. Thus, I resigned. And this crisis continues. I don't know when it will end," he added.

Muhyiddin had said in his televised speech last night that he had no choice in whether to support Dr Mahathir who did not have a majority, or to accept his nomination as prime minister.

"If I continue to support Tun Dr Mahathir, the political turmoil will continue. Perhaps parliament have to be dissolved and elections must be held, " he said.
