Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today admitted that the Conference of Rulers holds no power in the Constitution to oust any Prime Ministers.

However, Dr Mahathir, if the Sultans are desperate enough to remove the Prime Minister, then, it can be done.

"The power is not within the Constitution because we never expected anything like this to happen. That’s why we came up with the People’s Declaration. What we demand is not within the Constitution.

“I hope the Rulers will hear the rakyat’s voices,” said Dr Mahathir in his keynote speech at the People’s Congress 2016 held here, today.

Meanwhile, at a press conference after the congress which called for the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Dr Mahathir said he has no plans to have an audience with the Palace.

“The Sultans are interested in this. They have already made a statement. It is very unusual for them to make a statement.

“I remember a time when the people appealed to the Rulers not to attend the ceremony installing the first Governor General of Malaysia.

“And they listened to the people and subsequently Malayan Union was abolished,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also added that if there were any specific reasons, the Rulers would take action against Najib, but the veteran politician said he was uncertain of what it would be.

Last year, the Malay Rulers urged the Government to complete the investigation related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) as soon as possible and take "the appropriate stern action" against all found to be implicated.

In a statement, their Royal Highness stressed that all concerned should extend "real and sincere" cooperation so the investigation achieves its objectives.

The statement was released by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, after the pre-council meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara.
