The opposition should not be hypocritical over the proposed Political Contributions and Expenses Act which is able to strengthen the equality level of the country's politics, said Gerakan secretary general Datuk Liang Teck Meng.

He said the opposition, which was previously critical of political funds received by Barisan Nasional (BN), was now acting in the opposite manner when the Act was proposed by National Consultative Committee on Political Financing.

"I think equality should exist in all political parties but do not be a hypocrite. You criticised our political funding, asking where we get the funds but you do not agree with the proposal.

"So far we have never questioned the political funds received by the opposition. Therefore, to make it more transparent, I think it is very important for us to have control over political funds," he told reporters at the opening of the 2016 Gerakan Life Members Council annual general meeting here Friday.

The meeting was officiated by Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Kiong and also attended by deputy president Datuk Dr Cheah Soon Hai and former party president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon. -- Bernama
