Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) chairman Mohamad Sabu has clarified the party's stance on hudud, and hopes online portal The Malaysian Insider (TMI) will correct an article it published on Sunday to avoid confusing the public.

He says the article made it somehow appear that he would instruct Amanah members of parliament to vote against any bill to introduce hudud, should such a bill be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.

Mohamad in a statement issued the same day, reiterated that Amanah’s stance on any type of legislation, including those which concern syariah law, would be based on the party’s principles of making decisions democratically and in view of the Federal Constitution, as well as in consultation with its partners in the Opposition.

Mohamad said this is how Amanah would approach any vote on hudud, should the setting up of Pakatan Rakyat 2.0 materialise.

He said any decision for, or against, hudud would need to be discussed first among the component parties of the proposed new Opposition coalition.

TMI in its article cited Mohamad saying that former PAS federal lawmakers, who are now with Amanah, would be willing to vote against hudud, if it was put to a vote in the Dewan Rakyat.

Mohamad was reported as saying this at the launch of Parti Amanah Negara in Kuching on Sunday.
