UMNO veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah admitted still supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s leadership and that he was not involved in the plot to overthrow the government.

Fondly known as Ku Li, the former finance minister stressed that he chooses a leader who does the right thing and speaks the truth to the people.

“Yes, I’m still a (UMNO) backbencher. I am not in the opposition bench.

“But I hope we all do the right thing and tell the truth to the people,” said the Gua Musang MP to reporters at a Hari Raya open house in Bukit Jalil.

On Saturday Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there were attempts to topple the government by a ‘certain leader’ from the governing party (UMNO).

Ahmad Zahid who doesn’t want to reveal who the leader is, however, said this leader is hoping for the support of 87 Opposition MPs and an Independent MP to overthrow the government using the ‘back door’.

Razaleigh told reporters that the issue was news to him.

“What are your thoughts? Yes, maybe there is (a plot) or maybe not (no plot). It is ‘news’ to me,” he said.

When asked about his concerns on the current UMNO political landscape, he said: “I want to see things as how it was determined the party constitution, and we, as leaders must show that we can the people can trust us.

“We should do the necessary, as how it has been mandated by the rakyat. We cannot do the unusual. We would create suspicion… not good for the party," he added.
