Indian support for the MIC is slowly returning with the participation of young Indians from the community.

Putra MIC national coordinator and central working committee (CWC) member P. Kamalanathan said he personally experienced the engagement of many young professional Indians into the party who were giving back to the society.

"The MIC Putra wing is entirely filled with young professionals such as doctors, engineers and lawyers who have joined us to work with the Indian community," he told Bernama.

"They are going down to the grounds, listening and helping those who need it most and I am certain there would be more participation of Indians in MIC."

Although Kamalanathan said that gaining back the Indian support was still a long way ahead, he remained confident that the party would gain much more support from the Indian community now that the party’s internal affairs had been resolved.

He also said that this time around, newly elected party president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam would be able to consolidate well with MIC and Barisan Nasional component parties.

Kamalanathan, who is Hulu Selangor Member of Parliament, said: "With him (Subramaniam) as the new party leader, MIC would become a much stronger and solid party."

He added that the party was still looking forward to the return of some of its branch members which were deactivated by MIC for refusing to take part in the party’s election last July.

"We are still hoping that they (branch members) would come back to the party and join us once again to help the Indian community."

It was reported that some 800 branch members did not participate in the MIC elections because they had pledged their support towards its former president Datuk Seri G Palanivel.
