Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein expressed his disappointment towards Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was seen to be with the Opposition in campaigning for the upcoming by-elections.

But the UMNO vice president believed that the actions of the former premier would not deter support towards Barisan Nasional (BN), due to the inconsistencies of the latter’s views.

"I'm saddened actually, that Tun Mahathir had gone this far (to support the Opposition). But in the end, the rakyat will judge (Tun Mahathir), not our party, and not our candidates here or in Sungai Besar," said Hishammuddin.

"I'm also puzzled because initially, Tun Mahathir said he supported the Opposition to defeat BN. Yesterday, he supported Amanah. But PAS is also part of the Opposition.

"I don't understand, what's the rationale? He's not even clear in which Opposition he is supporting. Is it PAS? Amanah? Or DAP? Yesterday, he was on DAP's platform," Hishammuddin told newsmen after a reception with voters at the Kampung Mesjid polling district here today.

When asked if Dr Mahathir would be able to influence voters in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar, Hishammuddin said he was confident that voters were able to make wise decisions and see through the former prime minister's agenda.

"I doubt he can influence the voters here because whatever his arguments, they have no relevance to the voters here," he added.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir was seen campaigning in Sungai Besar for the Parti Amanah Negara candidate, Azhar Abdul Shukur.

Tomorrow, he is scheduled to head to Kuala Kangsar to campaign alongside Pakatan Harapan for the June 18 by-election.
