PKR vice-president PKR Mohamed Azmin Ali has expressed confidence that the opposition pact would not face much problems in the Permatang Pauh by-election as PAS leadership has given assurance to support PKR in its campaign to retain the parliamentary seat.

In fact, he said the issue of withdrawing PKR's statement against PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang over the hudud issue did not arise in Permatang Pauh even though several political analysts anticipated the disputes among the opposition parties to give negative impact to the by-election result.

"I have said before that I'm confident that the leadership, either at the division, state or national levels, are committed to defend the opposition pact's policy and cooperation.

"This is because we contested in the by-election to win and to make changes," he told reporters after presenting donation to the management of Mengkuang Mosque in Kampung Mengkuang Semarak near here Friday.

The Selangor menteri besar said what was more important right now was for all opposition leaders to stay united to ensure that the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat would remain as PKR's.

The Permatang Pauh Parliamentary by-election was called after its incumbent Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was disqualified as an elected representative after a petition of royal pardon against his imprisonment for sodomy filed by his family was rejected by the Pardons Board.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail for sodomising his former personal assistant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

The Election Commission has set the nomination day for the by-election today (Saturday), while polling is on May 7.
