Pas is not considering former Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Deputy Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar as the candidate for the Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seat in the upcoming 13th general election (GE-13).

According to sources, Datuk Abdul Rahman Maidin is the candidate for Pas as announced on the March 10.

“Rahman Maidin is Pas candidate,” said the source to Astro Awani.

However according to another, Pas will have re-examine the candidates who will be offered the seat due to several issues could raise problems during nomination day this Saturday.

Last night, Shariff had announced that he will be contesting for the Tase Gelugor parliamentary seat after his name was not nominated as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate

He was willing to stand as an independent candidate supporting Pakatan Rakyat.

Shariff made the announcement, assuming the seat was only ‘borrowed’ to another candidate during the 2008 general election.

In the 2008 election, Shariff made way for kepada Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop to contest in the parliamentary seat at the request of then BN chairman Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Nor Mohamed won against Pas candidate Ismail Salleh with a majority of 4,547 votes.

Shariff defeated Pas Pulau Pinang deputy commissioner Dr. Mujahid Yusof Rawa with a big majority of 10, 183 votes in 2004.

BN announced its candidate list yesterday naming Umno Tasek Gelugor division chief Shahbudin Yahya as the candidate for the parliamentary seat. He is moving from his Permatang Berangan state seat.

The Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seat is one of the two parliamentary seats won by BN in Penang during the last general election.

During the Pas 60 celebration convention in 2010, the party vice president, Datuk Husam Musa named Tasek Gelugor as of the seat targeted to be won in Penang.

In the 2008 general election, Pas did not win any parliamentary seats in Penang and only won the Permatang Pasir state seat.
