The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) will hold a re-election of the Malaysian Youth Parliament members to ensure that those elected represent the racial and gender composition.

Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the re-election was due to weaknesses in the election process with Malay male comprising 90 percent of those elected.

"I've applied for the views and approval of the Cabinet Committee to hold a re-election of the unsuccessful candidates during the last election.

"The candidates are female Chinese, Indians and others that reflect the demographics of the population in Malaysia," he told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Youth Development at parliament house on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The 120 representatives of Youth Parliament will discuss local issues as exposure to the law making process and administrative system of the country.

Khairy said the Malaysian Youth Parliament will commence on January 10 next year in the Dewan Rakyat while the pre-sitting will be held later this month.

The Malaysian Youth Parliament is modelled on those in 33 countries including Australia, United Kingdom, East Timor and Bangladesh.
