University Malaya will be closed early today for electrical repair works, a circular from the UM's registrar revealed today.

Classes were also ordered to shut down after 4pm to facilitate the maintenance and repair works.

In the circular signed by UM registrar Yusoff Musa, students and staff were told to leave by 4pm for the repair works.

“To avoid untoward incidents from happening, the university management had decided that office operation at the UM campus to be closed early, at 4pm today,” the circular read.

University of Malaya Student Council (PMUM) president Fahmi Zainol who also shared a copy of the circular on his Facebook said lecturers were also ordered to cancel classes today.

Meanwhile, UM’s vice-chancellor student affairs Prof Datuk Dr Rohana Yusoff told the New Straits Times that the shut down had nothing to do with the “40 Years: From University of Malaya to Jail” event, scheduled to be held at the campus at 9pm tonight.

She denied that UM was in emergency mode and stressed that everything was peaceful at the campus.

Yesterday, the UM authorities denied news report that the campus security will be taken over by the police ahead of Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim talk at the PMUM’s event.

Rohana was quoted by an online media saying that UM does not need police as it has its own security.
