UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin described the of the three UMNO vice-president incumbents yesterday as the best recognition they could receive in return for their contribution towards the party and government.

"This is a message from the grass roots delegates that they want continuity in terms of government and party transformation.

"I feel it's a recognition of their roles in strengthening UMNO," he told reporters after a mental health programme here today.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein managed to retain their vice-president posts in UMNO's Supreme Council election yesterday.

Khairy, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, said that in addition to having vast experience the three leaders were totally compatible with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his Deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in implementing the national transformation agenda.

"The delegates consider them as safe hands, people whom they can trust and depend on to safeguard our stability. I congratulate them," he said.

Commenting on the stiff competition between Hishammuddin and Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, he called it a signal from some delegates indicating that they wanted a change.

"It could be a signal from the grass roots to whoever holds the position, not to take it for granted. And not to treat their mandate lightly as things can change at anytime," he said.
