Typhoon Hagupit was detected about 1,018 km to the northeast of Kudat, Sabah heading towards the west as at 8am today.

The Meteorological Department, in a statement, today said the typhoon was detected at latitude 11.9 north and latitude 124.6 east.

According to the statement, the typhoon brought strong northeasterly winds with a speed of 50 to 60 km per hour with waves reaching 4.5 metres high in the waters off Sabah, Labuan, Miri in Sarawak as well as Condore, North Reef and Layang-Layang which were expected to continue until Friday.

Strong northeasterly winds are also expected to occur in the waters off Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, east Johor and Sarawak from tomorrow until Friday.

The strong winds and rough seas are dangerous to all coastal and shipping activities, including fishing and ferry services.
