A two-year-old girl died in an alleged abuse case involving her own family members in Kampung Tebing Tembah, Paka, here, Tuesday.

Dungun police chief Supt Ahmad Zailani Yaakub said the victim, Nur Safiah Nudzirah Sabarudin, the youngest of eight siblings, lived with her sister and brother-in-law since last July as her parents were working in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Ahmad Zailani, the victim was rushed to a Paka clinic at 3pm by the suspects after she was found unconscious.

Further examination on the child revealed bruises on her body and legs in addition to some serious injuries to the head.

The victim however succumbed to her injuries and was believed to have breathed her last breath at about 12 noon.

"Arrests have been made for further investigations and an autopsy was conducted by the experts at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu, and we shall wait for the results of the autopsy.

“Both suspects have been arrested and remanded for seven days for investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code," he said.

He said the victim's sister and brother-in-law, aged 26, had been detained at the forensic unit of the hospital on the same day.

According to Ahmad Zailani, the brother-in-law was working as a security officer while the victim’s sister was a housewife.

Meanwhile, the victim's uncle Khairi Mat Arif said that he did not expect such incident would take place among members of his own family.

"Children under the age of two should be loved and not abused. Abuse incidents are prevalent in mass media, but today I feel the pain of seeing our own relative being abused.

"She was just two years old; I am very disappointed as this incident could have been prevented," he said after the funeral at 8.30pm at a cemetery in Mukim Kuala Paka, Kampung Limbong, here.
