State governments have also cancelled or postponed open house events in conjunction with 2014 Aidilfitri as a mark of respect for victims of the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 crash tragedy.

Even though the whole nation is saddened by the tragedy, Muslims are still obliged to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri after observing the fast during Ramadan.

This year's Aidilfitri celebrations can still be held in moderation and with decorum.

The cancellation or postponement is also in line with the decision to cancel the cabinet ministers' 2014 Aidilfitri open house, which was announced by the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday.

The cabinet also agreed to cancel the 2014 Malaysia Aidilfitri open house event, organised by the Tourism and Culture Ministry scheduled to be held in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan.

In Johor Baharu, the open house that was to be hosted by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri at his official residence in Saujana was postponed to next August 3.

Mohamed Khaled through his twitter said the event was to held at the Pasir Gudang close-door stadium from 11 am to 3 pm.

MAS flight MH17 which was carrying 298 passengers, including 43 Malaysians, crashed, believed to be shot down in Donetsk, east Ukraine last Thursday.

In Melaka, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron announced that the state government had taken the decision to postpone the Aidilfitri open house which was scheduled to be held on Syawal 1 at the Melaka International Trade Centre here.

However, he said in a statement on Friday the function would be held on August 9 at the same venue starting from 10.30 am to 4 pm.

In Kuala Terengganu, Menteri Besar Terengganu Datuk Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said the Aidilfitri open house at his official residence, Seri Iman scheduled for July 28 was also cancelled.

In Labuan, the cancellation of Labuan's annual Aidilfitri open house was a directive from the Ministry of Federal Territories in line with the cabinet's decision, said Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rosman Isli.

The open house is held annually by Labuan Corporation with people from all walks of life, political, community and government leaders being invited to celebrate the event.

In Padang Besar, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man said the state government was also adhering to the federal government's decision in cancelling the state level Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house scheduled to take place at The Residency, the menteri besar's official residence in Kangar on August 7.

"For this year, there is no Hari Raya open house," he said when met after the Raya cake presentation by Perlis Raja Muda Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail to agencies on duty at the Malaysia/Thailand this Hari Raya here.

In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman Aman today announced the cancellation of the chief minister and cabinet ministers' Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house, which was scheduled to be held on the second day of Hari Raya at the Likas Sports Complex, Kota Kinabalu.

In George Town, the Penang state government Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house was also cancelled out of respect to the crash victims of flight MH17.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said state assembly members could hold Hari Raya celebrations at their respective areas in moderation.

In Kuantan, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob's open house in conjunction with the 2014 Aidilfitri scheduled to be held on Syawal 1 at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Ahmad Shah here, was also cancelled.

Pahang State Secretary Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail said the event should have been held from 11am to 4pm but was cancelled because the state government was sympathethic over the incident.

At the same time, the menteri besar's open house to be held at the Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Ahmad Shah on Syawal 3 in Bentong was also cancelled.

In Kota Baharu, Umno Kelantan welcomed the government's decision to cancel the cabinet ministers' open house and Malaysia Aidilfitri open house as a mark of respect to the crash victims.

Kelantan Umno Liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the cancellation reflected the government's concern towards the families of the MH17 passengers and crew.

Meanwhile, Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president, Azih Muda also welcomed the federal and state government's move to cancel or postpone the open house events.

"We also empathise with the hardship faced by the family members involved and this is a good example of the prime minister's concern as head of the government that cares for the people," he said.

In agreeing with the government's decision, Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) president, Datuk Dr Marimuthu Nadason said the whole nation should hold prayers for the victims, regardless of religion or race.
