Representatives of two construction companies were fined a total of RM85,000 by the Sessions Court here on Tuesday after they pleaded guilty to failing to ensure safety at their project site, resulting in the death of one person and injury to four others in the collapse of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge ramp in June last year.

Judge Sitarun Nisa Abdul Aziz fined Chan Kah Heen, 39, who appeared on behalf of Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd, RM50,000, while Raub Razali, 50, the director of Giga Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd, was fined RM35,000.

Cergas Murni was charged with failing to undertake safety measures during the construction works at the Batu Maung intersection, Package 3A of the Penang Second Bridge about 7pm on June 6 last year.

The collapse resulted in the death of former policeman, Tajudin Zainal Abidin and injuries to two civilians Thilasheni Rajendran, 25 and Gajashantini Gajanujan, 25.

Giga Engineering & Construction was accused of failing to ensure the safety of its workers during the construction of the bridge at the same time and place.

This resulted in the injury of two foreign workers, Slamet Toket and Tin Maung Lwin.

Chan and Raub were first charged with the offence in the Magistrate's Court here on Jan 22 this year, charged with the offence in the Magistrate's Court here on Jan 22 this year, but had pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge before Magistrate Muhammad Najib Ismail.

However, they changed their plea to guilty when the case came up for mention on Tuesday.

Chan and Raub paid the fine.
