Samsung will cease operations of Samsung Electronics Display Malaysia (SDMA), a television manufacturing facility in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, in April.

The company, however, stressed that the withdrawal of the TV production lines would not affect its other businesses in Malaysia, which employ more than 5,000 employees.

The move, following the initiation of a strategic plan to improve overall business efficiency, would affect around 620 employees, it said in a statement today.

"The 475 Malaysians and 145 other foreign workers employed at the plant will receive a fair and reasonable compensation package," the company said.

Samsung said it will also provide career counselling and vocational training, while opportunities to transfer to other Samsung companies will be made available where possible.

Its other businesses in Malaysia include a Samsung Electronics microwave oven manufacturing facility and a Samsung SDI battery making facility.

Samsung said it will continue to sell TVs in Malaysia, and existing and new customers will continue to have their TV products maintained by the Samsung Customer Care Network that remains in place.
