The Russian government has reportedly edited Wikipedia information on the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 tragedy by changing the references that indicate the government’s involvement in the incident.

London based The Telegraph’s Deputy Chief of Technology writer, Matthew Sparkes said the Twitter bot monitoring the edits of Wikipedia has identified the IP address (the unique serial number of a computer or network) of the Russian government that made the edit.

The edit was discovered by @RuGovEdits, a Twitter bot that tweets any edits on Wikipedia if it was made by an IP address belonging to the Russian government.

The report entitled ‘Russian government edits Wikipedia on flight MH17’ also claimed that an internet user from the Television and Radio Broadcasting Company of Russia (VGTRK) edited information on the incident on the Russian Wikipedia site.

The user also added in the Wikipedia post “The plane (MH17) was shot down by the Ukrainian soldiers” replacing “The plane was shot down by terrorists of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic using Buk system missiles, which the terrorists received from the Russian Federation”.

MH17 was carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew members en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was said to have been shot down and crashed close to the Ukraine-Russia border.

During a press conference early Friday morning, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that Ukrainian authorities believed the plane was shot down.

The flight took off from Amsterdam at 12.15pm (Dutch local time) on Thursday and was expected to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by 6.10am (Malaysian local time) on Friday.
