Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s announcement to retain and strengthen the Sedition Act 1948 portrays the maturity of UMNO in proving that the party is based on reality and on track.

Strengthening and making improvements to the Act is believed to strengthen the unity between the races in the country.

UMNO vice-presidents and the three wings’ leaders expressed their support and hopes that the Act will be able to guarantee prosperity and unity.

These are what they had said:

UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein

"We improve the Sedition Act, it is a decision we see as completing the law. We will talk to the Attorney-General for further action.
"Let's not polemicise politics and the issue now is stability."

UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

"We Muslims cannot insult the non-Muslims, just like how the non-Muslims cannot insult the Muslims. This is clearly written in al-Quran."

UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin

"This is a bold and smart move by the president. It not only gives the Malays protection but the Act can also serve as a shied to all Malaysians. Not merely to defend a particular race or religion."

UMNO Wanita chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil

"Alhamdunillah, the president had listened to the the voice of the people and this is a smart move. I believe with the decision, it will bridge the divide and let us work together to prove that there is place for everybody in this country.
"If our agenda is only for Malaysia, I believe the people will accept the decision."

UMNO Puteri chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin

"It is a good move. It is not only good for the Malays and Islam but it also beneficial to all. And this is truly 1Malaysia."

In his policy speech at the 68th UMNO general assembly, Najib said the decision was taken after consulting various parties.

He stressed that the Act is necessary to protect the sanctity of all religions.

He said the Act will also be used against those who called for the secession of Sabah and Sarawak from Malaysia.
