Somehow, the social media over these past few days had been abuzz with a debate on Ravers vs Hipsters.
For the unknowing adults, the two are just some random sub-cultures that the nation's youngsters are crazy about.
Things get even more confusing for this unknowing lot when these two groups get into a dispute on social media.
So, who are the Ravers and Hipsters, actually?
RAVER
1. Derived from the original word rave, which directly translated as talking in delirium, ranting or speaking with great enthusiasm.
2. The term, however, is an acronym of Radical Audio Visual Experience, which was introduced in Chicago, United States, back in the 1980s.
3. The ideology includes fast music (usually electronic music and accompanied by a deejay), as well as all night long parties.
4. Rave, in the 1980s and 1990s, was considered illegal in many countries due to a high abuse of psychoactive drugs, with MDMA (Ecstasy) pills being the preferred choice of substance for most ravers.
5. In the early days, the location of a rave party is usually kept a secret until the day arrives.
6. Rave dance is rarely choreographed. Most of the time it takes inspiration from the music itself. 'Shuffling', a fast heel-and-toe action, is one popular style of dance.
7. Attire wise, ravers opt for loose, casual, sporty and colourful outfit. In some parts of the world, ravers only wear black outfits.
HIPSTER
1. A culture that has been around since the 1990s but only began to rage post 2010.
2. Hipsters are commonly defined as middle-class youngsters who choose to live in luxury and take pride in being offbeat.
3. This includes their sense of fashion, dining places and the crowds they mingle with.
4. They are also known for their 'unique' interests. Most of the time, what they choose to do might not be the most 'in' thing within the community, such as hopping from one coffee joint to another.
5. Hipsters also have their own kind of music and dance. But these are not their strongest features because they pay more attention to style and fashion.
6. The movies they watch and the music they listen to are usually not mainstream.
