Police are still waiting for reports from various parties including the Chemistry Department, post-mortem report on victims who died in the cycling accident at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam in Johor Bahru, as well as medical records of those injured.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus said the parties who are preparing these reports need time since they have to be thorough, especially in an accident involving many victims.

He added that as soon as these reports were received, police will complete investigations and submit the papers to the deputy public prosecutor immediately.

"Police are conducting the investigations with honesty and in detail and not influenced by anyone, so give us time and space to investigate," he said in a press conference.

Mahamad Akhir also denied claims that police were purposely delaying the investigations into the case which resulted in the death of eight teenagers while two more were critically injured and six others injured after a car rammed into them at about 3am on Feb 18.

The female driver of the car, aged 22, was freed on police bail a day after the accident.

Mahamad Akhir advised the public to not discuss the issue and make assumptions or give their opinions or comments in the print or electronic media.

Such action could disrupt police investigations and these people could face legal action including under Section 233 (1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), he said.

"There have been various assumptions on the case, especially on social media, and I hope Malaysians respect the law," he said. - BERNAMA
