After more than a year of being hunted down by the authorities, the main suspect in the murder case of Customs deputy director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Ibrahim has finally been caught.

The 30-year-old suspect was arrested with three other individuals in two separate raids in Ampang and Batu Caves by the city police's Criminal Investigations Department, based on information and surveillance carried out at 5am yesterday.

At about 8.15am on April 26 last year, Shaharuddin was gunned down by two men on a motorbike whilst on the way to his office in Putrajaya.

Shaharuddin was hit in the neck and his head after three shots were fired. He was pronounced dead at 9.20am in Putrajaya Hospital.

Last September, Deputy City CID chief Asst Comm Khairi Ahrasa had informed that police have identified and obtained photographs of the main suspect in Shaharuddin's murder case.

He said his team was confident in obtaining the full identity of the main suspect to facilitate police tracking.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had before this announced that the late Shaharuddin would be promoted to a higher grade, from Public Sector Superscale (JUSA) B to JUSA A.

Najib had said the upgrade would entail an increment in annual gratuity and pension benefits received by Shaharuddin's widow.
