Winning the first gold medal for Malaysia in her debut at the Asean University Games (AUG) has made wushu exponent Phoon Eyin's victory even sweeter and meaningful for her.

The 18-year-old narrowly beat the host country's Natalie Cherisda Tanasa by 0.01 of a point to win the gold by collecting 9.38 points.

The bronze medal went to Payai, from Laos, who scored 7.26 points.

The wushu competition in the 17th AUG is held at the Sriwajaya Promotion Complex, here.

"I'm so happy with my performance in my first competition at the AUG. Each time I compete in an event, I stay positive and I know I have to train very hard to achieve success," she told reporters.

Phoon is in pre-university studies at the Bukit Jalil Sports School.

She was a gold medal winner at the SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013 and also won gold at the World Wushu Championship in Kuala Lumpur the same year.

The wushu squad at the AUG also won two silver medals and one bronze medal.

The two silvers came from Wong Weng Son in the men's chanquan event and Ng Shin Yii in the women's taijiquan, and the bronze from Loh Choon How in the men's taijiquan.
