The proposal to amend the Sedition Act 1948 is among the main issues to be given attention by the Perak Umno Liaison Committee at the party's general assembly on Nov 29.

State Umno information chief Datuk Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib said this was because amendments to the act were the topic of discussion among the people at the grassroots level, with the majority urging that the act be retained.

"This issue will definitely be the main focus of the delegates, not only from Perak, but also from other states as most people want the act to be retained to ensure the country's peace and stability," he told Bernama here today.

He said efforts to strengthen the party machinery during the 14th General Election would also be another issue which would be the main focus of the delegates, especially when debating on the Umno president's address.

Mohd Khusairi said the issue needed to be debated as part of Perak Umno's efforts to ensure the party would be ready to face the general election.

On the economic resolution, he said it would cover many areas and the delegates would probably touch on the issue of the increase in petrol prices, as well as the Goods and Services Tax.

Mohd Khusairi said a sub-committee at the Umno state-level would discuss issues to be debated and appoint the delegates to do so.

He said Kampar Umno division head Datuk Radhi Manan would debate the presidential address; Tambun Umno Youth chief Mohamad Ziad Mohamed Zainal Abidin on the resolution pertaining to religion and education; and, Bukit Gantang division head Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, the resolution on economy.

Perak Umno is expected to send 704 delegates from 24 divisions to the general assembly.
