The government will seek to increase the availability of affordable housing in 2016.
According to the 2015/2016 Economic Report, 41,263 homes are currently being developed under the Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia Corporation (PR1MA) while 560 units have been successfully completed as at August 2015.
120,751 units are also in planning stages amounting to a total of RM1.2 billion spent for PR1MA as at August this year.
In order to ensure that the objectives of PR1MA are achieved, the government has also loosened the maximum eligible household income from RM8,000 to RM10,000.
Additionally, a total of RM209.6 million has also been spent under the People Housing Programme (PPR) for the construction of 15,996 homes as at August 2015.
While under the Rumah Mesra Rakyat 1Malaysia programme, some 2,183 homes have been built as at the same period amounting to a total cost of RM142.2 billion.
The programme, targeted for low income groups including fishermen, farmers, and low income families who own land but could not afford to build a home.
Meanwhile under the Rumah Idaman Rakyat programme, which is catered for middle income groups as well as first time home buyers, have targeted for 6,296 more homes to be built with 60% of it will be sold for RM250,000 and the remaining between RM250,000 and RM350,000.
As at August 2015, 1,801 homes have been built under Rumah Idaman Rakyat.
In addition the development of the Rumah Aspirasi Rakyat programme provides youths with the opportunity to be homeowners at a discounted price in both urban and rural areas.
As at August 2015, 22 projects are under development under this programme involving 11,872 units with a total cost of RM2.6 billion.
In a bid to increase home ownership amongst youths, the government has also enhanced the Skim Rumah Pertamaku programme by raising the eligible age from 35 years old to 40 years old.
The government has also increased the maximum allowable home price allowed to be purchased without downpayment to RM500,000 from RM400,000.
As at July 2015, some 463 loan applications amounting to RM100.2 million have been approved.
