The long queue to renew or apply for new passports is the result of the panic stirred when social media reported that the process will take as long as six months.

Newly-minted Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said this has resulted in a drastic increase in the number of new applications and renewals.

“Right now we want to ensure that our passport production is not affected because in some places, we are left with limited stocks,” he said in an exclusive interview with Astro AWANI.

“That is why we are setting a limit to the number of daily application of passports and renewals,” he said.

He said the ministry had also called up the supplier and informed them of the situation.

He said the supplier had promised to provide 70,000 passports every week.
