The Pakatan Rakyat women’s wings are united in their unconditional support towards Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah as the new Menteri Besar (MB) of Selangor.

This was based on an official statement by its three party leaders: PKR women’s wings chief, Zuraidah Kamaruddin, DAP women’s wings chief Chong Eng and PAS Muslimat chief Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff.

“We are united and we strengthen our support for Wan Azizah as the Selangor Menteri Besar,” the statement stated.

According to the statement, 30 out of 43 state legislative members in Selangor had agreed to the matter.

The leaders had also questioned this: Should Wan Azizah be a man will her nomination as the MB be questioned?

With the spirit of democracy, the women’s wings also stressed that the state constitution will not support gender discrimination and will not prevent a woman from leading a state.

The Pakatan women’s wings described Wan Azizah as a woman of steel who had stood beside her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and her family.

“From 1998 until now, Wan Azizah has been receiving all kinds of challenges during these 16 years.

“The choice for her to step out of politics is always there, however with her dedication towards her family, PKR and Malaysia is what made her to persevere in her struggle for justice, democracy and freedom,” added the statement.

Earlier, 30 Pakatan Rakyat state assemblymen in Selangor had voiced their support for Wan Azizah as the new Selangor MB.
