The Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu is seeking confirmation from the local authorities in Nepal whether any Malaysians were affected by the earthquake that hit the country today.

Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Othman Hashim said the embassy would try to check all hospitals, clinics and shelters as well as get information from relevant parties to find out if any Malaysians have been affected.

"In such cases, Wisma Putra (the Foreign Ministry) has to wait for confirmation pending investigations conducted by our embassy officials in Kathmandu who will communicate directly with the police, hospitals, rescue teams and others in Nepal.

"Sometimes our Malaysian embassy officials will face difficulties in obtaining information at the scene or hospital because the situation due to the unforeseen disaster has not been brought fully under control yet," he told Bernama here.

Othman assured that if there are any Malaysians involved, the embassy will seek assistance to find them.
