Najib: Gov't not afraid of 'Malaysian Spring'
Teoh El Sen | Updated: June 26, 2013
"The government is not afraid of the word Malaysian spring. Now what I stress is that all our actions must be based on the Federal Constitution, " he said in Parliament on Tuesday.
Najib was responding to a supplementary questiom by DAP chairman and Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh asking why the government was "so afraid od Malaysian Spring". Karpal asked why a police report was lodged against DAP life adviser Dr Chen Man Hin for merely mentioning the word.
“Why is the government so afraid? Is the Attorney-General (AG) Abdul Gani Patail going to charge him in court for it?”asked Karpal.
In May, former DAP vice chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz alleged that Chen had mentioned the word Malaysian Spring in an email sent to the former.
Subsequently, the police opened an investigation against Chen for allegedly planning to incite public disorder.
Najib, who is also Pekan MP, said that it was up to Gani to decide on Chen's case.
"In a parliamentary democracy, change is made through the ballot box, through elections. The people has the power to choose the government. The first past the post system allows the leaders who achieve the majority seats to form government and appoint the prime minister, " he said.
Najib said while freedom allows people to voice their views, and the government will not deprieve that freedom, the government will not hesitate to act to maintain peace.
"It's ironic that those who don't accept the election results accept the results of places they win, " he said to the thumping of BN MPs.
"Toppling a government through street protests will not bring any good, " said Najib, who said the countries that have gone through this has shown 'no signs of recovering'.
"Now is the time for us to go ahead and work.. let us all together form a Malaysia that is better than yesterday."
