The lifespan of the batteries powering the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 black box may have past its life.

Aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas said since the detection of the last signal on April 8, no other signals have been detected since.

This situation tends to make it more difficult for the search mission as the signal is important in trying to locate the last location of the flight in the Southern Indian Ocean.

After 36 days, Geoffrey said that the battery will not last longer as it has a 30-day lifespan.

"It sounds as though the battery life (of black box recorder) has come to an end. It's certified for 30 days, we're now into day-36. It's not likely it's going to last much more. So the fact that we haven't heard anything for two or three days, three or four days, indicates the possibly it's past its life."

Up until now, only four signals have been detected which may be related to the MH370 aircraft black box.

If no other signals are detected, a robotic submarine will be deployed in the seach for the missing plane.

The current search involves an area of 1,300 square kilometres, which is the same size of Los Angeles.
