The family of one of the passengers in the ill-fated MH17 flight will be heading to Amsterdam soon, following Malaysia Airlines (MAS)' offer to send them there to view the remains of their loved one.

Md Salim Sarmo, 65, the father of victim Md Ali Md Salim, told reporters he would be going there with his wife Junaidah Basiran, 62, two of their children, Mohd Zaki, 38, and Noryasimah, 23, and one of the victim's close friends, Mohamad Azuwa Mohamed, 25.

He said they would also be fulfilling their late son's wish to bring them for a holiday in Amsterdam, where he had been studying.

"We are not thinking of celebrating Hari Raya at home; what is important is that our late son's wish is fulfilled.

"We will prepare our passports to hopefully be there before Raya," he said when met after a briefing by MAS at Marriot Hotel here today.

On the briefing, Md Salim said MAS had offered to send four representatives of each MH17 passenger to Amsterdam to view the remains before the flight back to Malaysia for burial.

Md Salim said Muslim family members had also been assured that the bodies of their loved ones would be washed, wrapped in shroud and prayed over in Amsterdam before being flown home.

"Upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the family can decide whether to send the body directly to the cemetery for the funeral, or bring it home first, for relatives and friends to offer their last respects.

"Our family have decided to bring our late son's remains back to Muar, Johor before burial," he said.

A PhD student in Developmental Neuropsycho Pathology at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands, Md Ali, the fourth of eight children was returning home on holiday to Kampung Jayor, Pagoh Johor.

MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to KLIA when it crashed in Donetsk, East Ukraine, near the Russian border on Thursday.

The Boeing 777 jet was carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew.
