The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked the news portal Sarawak Report due to the threat it poses to national stability.

In a statement Sunday, MCMC said the reason it decided to block the website was because it published unverified content which is under investigation, after receiving information and complaints from the public.

"The website was blocked according to Section 211 and 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and it will be blocked until investigations by the special task force is over," it said.

MCMC also warned the public to be more cautious when sharing information on social networking sites, especially when content is unverified as it could be false information.

"We fear that such content could create a state of unrest and subsequently threatens national stability, public order and economic stability," the statement said.

It also said any information on websites which are spreading such critical content should be forwarded to MCMC at [email protected].
