Malaysians should be ready for the work-from-home concept in line with the current development in technology, said Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal.

He said working from home would benefit the new generation, which would give preference to higher wages, due to their willingness to integrate work and personal life.

"We have to be ready to do so, because if people abroad, such as in the United States, are already turning to the online system, we in Malaysia are still without such a system and we are still building towards this approach," he told reporters after opening the INTAN Digital Exploration 2015 (IDeX2015) here Friday.

IDeX 2015, themed 'The Future Is Now' had provided a platform for the private and public sectors in sharing ideas and experiences to align the direction of information and communication technology (ICT) to support the government's digital transformation agenda.

"The generation of 'Anywhere Worker' today are heading towards the work life integration, where they can combine their professional and private lives.

"We must take this opportunity because all walks of life in the future will use technology as a delivery system.

"So everything will be available online, and if we can see now and also in the near future, people will start working from home and no longer will be in the office," he said.

Mohamad Zabidi said, it was reported that at the moment, some 30 million Americans were working from home at least once a week, and the number would increase by 63 per cent in the next five years.

Commenting on the importance of IDeX, he said the exposure to the new technology being used and rapidly developed should be fully utilised by society.
