The 36-hour trip from Tarim, Yemen to Oman was an unforgettable experience for Amirul Danien Hafiz, 15, a student majoring in Quranic study for he had to endure great pain when his feet swelled due to the long bus ride.

The trip which should have taken just 17 hours was prolonged following six road blocks and checks by the Yemeni authorities.

The student from Dar al-Mustafa madrasah in Tarim was forced to use a wheelchair when he arrived at KL International Airport Monday night after boarding a flight from Doha, Qatar.

"This is the first time I experienced swollen feet. I sat in the bus far too long. Its difficult not being able to walk throughout the trip and I had to get help from my friends to move about," he told reporters when met here on Monday night.

Amirul was among 70 Malaysians who boarded Qatar Airways flight QR852 from Doha, Qatar and arrived at KLIA at 8.34 pm. The group are Malaysians evacuated from Hadhramaut to Salalah, Oman.

Some 98 Malaysians from Salalah are expected to arrive on Tuesday; 52 onboard QR844 from Doha to KLIA expected to arrive at 8.25 am while 46 onboard QR852 to arrive at 8.50 pm.

Meanwhile, a student majoring in Islamic study, Abdul Muiz Abdul Rahim, 21, said he and his friends were forced to return to Malaysia as their safety was not guaranteed.

"I was among 90 Malaysian students who did not return to Malaysia during the unrest in Yemen last year because the situation at that time was peaceful.

"Although the situation in Seiyun is under control now, the situation in Mukalla has changed due to unrest in Aden and we were advised by our instructors to return home," he said, adding that he had four more years to graduate

To date, the government has brought home 330 Malaysians, including the 70 people who arrived on Monday night, following escalating civil war in Yemen.
