The Youth and Sports Ministry is looking into upgrading facilities at the Labuan Sports Complex to boost sports development on the duty-free island.

The swimming pool, tennis court and hockey field are among the facilities being considered for the upgrading project.

Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the Public Works Department's director had informed him that the structure of the swimming pool was no longer safe for training and ordered for its immediate closure.

"We are considering to build a new swimming pool or carry out repair works," he said at a press conference after a visit to the sports complex, here, today.

He said the ministry’s development division would make an inspection and come up with a comprehensive report on the proposed development project.

"The construction of the facilities will get the ministry’s immediate attention. We are also considering the request to upgrade the futsal courts on the island," he added.

Khairy said the ministry also planned to set up a youth hostel at the sports complex as part of the ministry's master plan.

He said with improved sports facilities, Labuan would have the opportunity to lobby to host the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) in future.
